ONE STEP BEHIND ‘THE MASTERS OF MADNESS’ -

  • Wokingham Music Club @ Royal British Legion (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

One Step Behind is the UK's Premier and longest surviving MADNESS tribute band. Formed in spring 1993, the band achieved widespread recognition in an unusually short time, playing venues the length and breadth of Britain including the Marquee Club in London & the Venue in New Cross. Jaunts into Europe and beyond are also common place. Members of Madness have joined the One Step boys on stage on a number of occasions. Sax player Lee Thompson has played a few times commenting the band were “Tight as a ducks arse” and “Brilliant”. Lee is also quoted as saying that OSB were “single handily keeping the good ship Madness afloat”. Drummer Dan “Woody” Woodgate joined the band on stage for “One Step Beyond” and told the boys he thought they were amazing. "That's exactly what we used to be like - you've got it to a tee!" he said. Fine praise indeed! And he could not believe the keyboard playing used no overdubs and was all being played live! Perhaps the greatest tribute came from Suggs himself. At a gig at G-MEX in Manchester walked up to the microphone and said "By the way, we're MADNESS not One Step Behind!!” The subsequent review in the Melody Maker bared the headline “One Step Behind”. Fine praise indeed!

One Step Behind has also appeared on television a number of times. Singer Ian Soulsby made an appearance on "Stars In Their Eyes" in the 1990s while the whole band appeared on children's Saturday morning show SMTV (with Ant & Dec!) in 1998 performing their version of "Driving In My Car". OSB also featured on the "Tribute Band Night" programme, filmed in Rotterdam and broadcast on Dutch TV in 2004 (see video clip). OSB's most recent TV appearance was at the 2006 Proms party in Hyde Park, London. The band performed to around 50,000 people and a television audience in the millions! (see video clip's).

In 2019 One Step Behind performed a 9 date sell-out tour of New Zealand and Australia and in 2023 they celebrate 30 years together.

China Crisis in concert at The Whitty Theatre

  • Wokingham Music Club @The Whitty Theatre (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Wokingham Music Club is pleased to be bringing you an Evening with China Crisis, touring in support of their latest album release, China Greatness.

The early 1980’s heralded a second Liverpool-based musical renaissance and amongst

these lauded Merseyside acts was China Crisis, originally emerging in 1981 from their

native Kirkby broadly in the "new wave" genre as the songwriting duo of vocalist/keyboardist Gary Daly and guitarist/vocalist Eddie Lundon.

Citing influences as varied as Davie Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Eric Satie and Brian Eno, it’s not surprising that their sound was quickly distinguishable amongst their peers, often combining elements of synthpop with reggae, country and other styles with their own unique melodies and harmonies to create distinctively sophisticated but catchy pop in a style all its own. With their philosophy that “the song is the most important thing”, China Crisis weren’t just resourceful with the emerging technology of the time and the ongoing electronic music revolution but would creatively employ a distinctive sonic blend of more orthodox origins - horns, strings, woodwinds, pedal steel – a sound further enhanced by working with some of the greatest producers of the 20th century, including Mike Howlett, Langer/Winstanley, and perhaps most notably with Steely Dan’s Walter Becker.

The result of their effort was a clearly identifiable China Crisis sound that stood out from the crowd and garnered the band chart success around the globe, including three UK Top 40 albums and eleven UK Top 50 singles, their hits including the beloved "Wishful Thinking", "Christian", "Black Man Ray", "King in a Catholic Style", "Arizona Sky" and "African and White". More importantly the early years established a decades-loyal fanbase that continues to grow today. That the China Crisis sound is enduring is demonstrable well into the 21st Century, not just through the continued fidelity of their longtime fans but the fact that a whole new generation of musicians and listeners are becoming China Crisis devotees.

Now renown and beloved for their live performances which combine truly engaging music, a good bit of Scouse humor, and the clear kinship the band have with their fans, audiences leave China Crisis shows the all the happier for having been part of the moment.

Martin Turner ex Wishbone Ash “Live Dates 50th Anniversary Tour”

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Wishbone Ash’s seminal 1973 double live album “Live Dates”

Martin Turner and his band return to the concert stages during 2023 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Wishbone Ash’s seminal double live album “Live Dates” (1973).

Wishbone Ash was formed by West Country musicians Martin Turner and Steve Upton, who arrived in London in 1969 to embark on their musical journey. Intent on creating a musical sound that was rich in texture and melody, Martin Turner envisaged the band’s innovative harmony-guitar hallmark and guitarists Ted Turner and Andy Powell were recruited via a now legendary Melody Maker advert. The partnership of the original line-up of Wishbone Ash forged a unique musical identity that would produce some of rock music's best loved works and influencing numerous successful bands, resulting in millions of album sales and concert attendances. Wishbone Ash would become one of the most enduring British rock acts - its name synonymous with high quality guitar-driven melodic rock music.

Five decades later, the music of the classic line-ups of Wishbone Ash continues to delight audiences worldwide through both live performances and a rich legacy of recorded work that continues to be enjoyed by fans old and new. Classic album releases such as Wishbone Ash, Argus, Pilgrimage, Wishbone Four, There’s the Rub, New England and Live Dates defined the Wishbone Ash sound and have touched the hearts of several generations of music fans. As lead vocalist, bassist and key creative force, founding original member Martin Turner was central to the critical and commercial success of Wishbone Ash’s most revered albums, with his passionate vocal delivery, songwriting ability, keen melodic sense and production values being major ingredients in the definitive Wishbone Ash sound. Martin Turner continues to delight audiences with performances of the band’s best loved works with his current line-up, which features guitarists Danny Willson and Misha Nikolic, and drummer Sonny Flint.

The 2023 tour will see Martin and his band performing a show featuring music from Live Dates as well as other Wishbone Ash classics. Capturing the original Wishbone Ash line-up at its very best during the peak of its commercial success and featuring epic tracks such as “The King Will Come”, “Warrior”, “Throw Down the Sword” and “Phoenix”, Live Dates remains one of the most enduring and best loved double live albums of the rock era.

Martin Turner’s Live Dates 50th Anniversary Tour is an event that no Wishbone Ash aficionado will want to miss.

Best known for his work with Rod Stewart, Jim Cregan co-produced, co-wrote and was Rod's musical director for nearly 2 decades and tonight he brings his fantastic band to Wokingham Music Club.

In 1976 Jim join Rod Stewart and helped Rod deliver some of his greatest hits but Jim is not a one band man. He has played with Family, Cockney Rebel (yep that guitar solo is Jim)

Jim has had his songs recorded by Joe Cocker, Willie Nelson, Kid Rock, Russel Watson amongst many others, and he has played on stage with guitarists Jeff Beck, Frank Zappa, Pete Townsend and Chuck Berry. Oh yes and Tina Turner, Elton John, Cat Stevens and Katie Melua to name a few!.

He has received over 40 gold & platinum records to date, and his guitar solo on Cockney Rebel's "Come Up And See Me (Make Me Smile)" still sounds alright!

This evening will be an evening of hit after hit performed by world class musicians Ben Mills - Guitar and vocals, Harry James - Drums, Pat Davey - Bass, Sam Tanner - Keyboards and of course the man himself Jim Cregan

Kossoff...The Band plays on in concert at Wokingham Music Club at Royal British Legion

  • Wokingham Music Club @ Royal British Legion (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

By popular demand Kossoff….The Band Plays on are coming back.

The stunning blues-rock music of Paul Kossoff, the lead guitar prodigy whose soaring playing lit up 1970s rockers Free will be delivered to us by the incredible, Kossoff….The Band Plays on.

Kossoff, of course, died tragically young after a drugs battle aged just 25, but his music lives on with The Band Plays On, a band featuring Terry Slesser, the lead vocalist of Koss’s post-Free band, Back Street Crawler.

The Band Plays On and will feature the very best of Free’s back catalogue and also Back Street Crawler’s two-album sojourn. The band’s name is fittingly also the name of BSC’s first album with Kossoff from 1975.

Highlights include Free’s world-wide hit and rock anthem “All Right Now”, “Fire and Water”, crowd pleaser “The Hunter” and “Molten Gold”, one of the first tracks Slesser and Kossoff played together with Back Street Crawler.

Renowned vocalist Terry Slesser has put together a fine ensemble of high-calibre musicians to pay tribute to the legendary guitarist Paul Kossoff (best known for one of the most memorable guitar solos of all time featured on Free’s classic hit All Right Now).

Billed as ‘Kossoff - The Band Plays On’, this is not a covers band or 'tribute' act as Terry performed alongside Kossoff in post-Free outfit Back Street Crawler.

Frontman Terry Slesser sure knows how to captivate an audience. Aside from his amazing vocal ability (the reason Kossoff chose Terry to to front his band), he's got some seriously entertaining anecdotes in his armoury which are all delivered with style and panache.

This is a revealing insight into songwriting, recording and life on (and off!) the road. Terry’s shared experiences of working, touring and living with Koss truly differentiate this show from being a mere tribute act.

Guitarist John Buckton has the Kossoff sound down to an absolute tee and that's no huge surprise when you consider that Free drummer Simon Kirke has said:..

"If Free were to reform, John would be my first choice as guitarist."

Buckton, has captured the soul and rawness of Koss' playing.

Paul Kossoff had his own unique style and it lives on in John Bucktons' fretboard.

Paul Kossoff was revered by music fans and fellow musicians alike and his personality shone through his performances.

All of this is brought to life in a show of sheer quality which pays homage to the highly talented and much missed guitarist.

The Music of Paul Simon and Simon and Garfunkel

As seen on BBC The One Show!

The Sounds of Simon is a tribute to the wonderful music of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, through the years as Simon and Garfunkel, to the successes of both their solo careers.

Explore the friendship that led to songs such as Mrs Robinson, The Sounds of Silence and of course, Bridge Over Troubled Water. The full band will also take you through the pair’s solo careers, with songs such as You Can Call Me Al, Graceland, and Art’s smash hit, Bright Eyes.

Paul and Art are played to perfection, bringing in elements of their famously fractious relationship, as well as replicating the beautiful harmonies flawlessly.

With video clips, stories, and memories from the last 50+ years, this is a wonderful show filled with excellent music, nostalgia, and a genuine love for some great musicians.

This is the UK’s longest running tribute to Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Come and see why!

STINGCHRONICITY: The Story of Sting & The Police

  • Wokingham Music Club at The Whitty Theatre (map)

The Police Academy and The Sting Operation present a theatre show like no other, telling the story of Sting’s career—starting with the early days of The Police, charting their rise and fall, through to Sting’s highly successful solo period in the ’80s and ’90s, and The Police’s eventual reunion in 2007. Designed specifically for theatres, this immersive show takes The Police Academy and The Sting Operation to a new level.

Many tribute bands claim to have one particular element of their act ‘just right’—the look, the sound, the equipment, the musicianship... yet rarely do you find a tribute where each one of these individual components has been painstakingly addressed in just as much detail as the last.

The Police Academy and The Sting Operation, however, do exactly that—presenting an incredibly authentic tribute experience, honouring one of the greatest artists of our time. ‘Roxanne’, ‘Every Breath You Take’, ‘Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic’, ‘Englishman in New York’ and ‘Fields of Gold’ are just a few of the highlights in a set that could legitimately be described as ‘all killer, no filler’.

Mark Harrison band

Acclaimed national touring artist Mark Harrison brings his unique music and band back to Wokingham Music Club

 MARK HARRISON (National + 12-string guitars/vocals)

Charles Benfield (double bass/vocals)

Ben Welburn (drums/percussion)

There is no one in music quite like Mark Harrison. With his unique and acclaimed rhythm section, he is widely considered one of the most original and interesting artists around.  His highly individual, all-original music has taken him and the band to some of the top venues and festivals in the UK, attracting acclaim wherever he goes. Recent appearances on BBC Radio 2, as guest on Cerys Matthews’s show and on the Pick Of The Week show, have further added to his growing reputation.

Described at BBC Radio 2 as ‘quirky’ and an artist who ‘makes you think afresh’, Mark is a totally original songwriter, a stunning guitarist, and a master storyteller. Mark’s live shows are well-known not only for the music but also for his introductions and explanations of the songs, delivered in a manner often described as ‘wry’ and ‘dry’.

Mark is a songster, and his songs cover all manner of non-standard subjects. With catchy tunes, lyrics than intrigue and engage, and striking rhythms, they make you smile, think and move. He takes elements of roots music, including folk, blues and gospel, to create something new that is very much his own genre. Each song is a snapshot of life or has a story to tell, like a 3-minute film or novel.

A thrilling, rhythmic, finger-picker and slide player, with a very distinctive style, Mark tours extensively. He has released six albums which have been unanimously acclaimed across a wide range of areas of the music world, receiving a very great deal of airplay and highly enthusiastic reviews in the UK, Europe and the US, the latest being the double album THE ROAD TO LIBERTY.

Here are a few of the things that have been said about Mark and his music:

he takes very real things that happen in life and makes you think afresh about them (Paul Jones, BBC Radio 2)

a bit different and kinda groovy too (Cerys Matthews, BBC Radio 2)

Celebrating the genius of Stevie Wonder throughout his entire career, the mesmeric vocalist, Noel McCalla, and award-winning saxophonist, Derek Nash, have put together a band of top musicians to play a wide-ranging back catalogue of classic hits, from 1970’s Signed, Sealed, Delivered through to hits from Talking Book, Innervisions, Songs in the Key of Life and Hotter than July.

Playing hit after hit, from the dance floor classics I Wish and Superstition to beautiful arrangements of My Cherie Amour and Overjoyed, the set will also include compositions by Stevie Wonder that others have had massive hits with.

Noel McCalla’s long association with the brilliant Morrisey Mullen Band earned him acclaim as “one of Britain’s best Soul Singers” (Blues and Soul Magazine) and, for more than 19 years, Noel's searing, soulful vocals were featured with the iconic Manfred Mann's "Earth Band". He also provided vocals on Mike Rutherford's highly acclaimed album, Smallcreep's Day, and is often featured with jazz funk band, Mezzoforte.

Derek Nash has played in Jools Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra since 2004 and is also a member of the Ronnie Scotts Blues Explosion. He has won several British Jazz Awards throughout his career fronting Sax Appeal, his Acoustic Quartet and the funk band, Protect the Beat. Derek has performed live, on record and on television with Gregory Porter, Chaka Khan, David Sanborn, Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Amy Winehouse and many, many more.  At the forefront of the British jazz movement, Derek Nash is "one of the most versatile saxophonists in the UK today" (The Guardian)
