John Otway at Emmbrook Sports & Social Club

Rock veteran Otway dubbed himself “rock’n’roll’s greatest failure” after many unsuccessful attempts to produce a second hit single to follow his 1977 classic (Cor Baby, That’s) Really Free with Wild Willy Barrett.

25 years later, he was back on Top ofThe Pops with the wonderful disco pastiche, ‘Bunsen Burner’ and back in the charts as a birthday present from his adoring and patient fans.

But that, of course, was not enough.

A couple of years ago John realised that live footage from the many concerts over the years, plus many TV appearances - and a failed world tour attempt - would make an entertaining documentary film. So he made one. Initially expecting a couple of humble screenings for fans, the film premiered at the Odeon, Leicester Square, was shown at Cannes - and at prestigious UK film Festivals

Expect madcap mayhem and some scintillating stunts from a man old enough to know better…..and also to be surprised at just what a showman and musician really lies underneath the tomfoolery.

Rod Clements in Concert at ESSC in association with Artree Music

Rod Clements

I have to pinch myself every time I think about Rod Clements playing at our club because back in the early 70’s my brother and I used to go and see Lindisfarne whenever they played in London. I thought then and still do know that there were one of the top acts I have ever seen.

In the mid/late 60’s Lindisfarne began life as 'The Downtown Faction', and was led by Rod, but they soon changed their name to Brethren. Then in 1970, they were joined by Alan Hull and another name change this time to Lindisfarne. This was to be the turning point in Rod’s career. After years of hard graft on the road their first album Nicely out of Tune was released. The 2 singles from that album did not chart immediately but they like the album did after the release of their second album Fog on the Tyne.

Record sales were never as good as their live performances and these performances took their toll on the band and they spilt up only to reformed many times.

Rod has played with acts such as The Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Santana. He wrote "Meet Me on the Corner", a UK Top 5 hit in March 1972, which went on to win him an Ivor Novello Award.

Rod is a wonderful performer with stories a plenty. This will be a very special night in the history of our club.

Tonight's support act Hickory Signals who are a duo from Brighton. They are multi-instrumentalists, Laura Ward and Adam Ronchetti accompany strong vocal melodies with guitar, shruti, flute, glockenspiel and a variety of percussion, layering sounds carefully and minimally to atmospheric effect. The Small Fakers celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake At The Whitty Theatre

Small Fakers will be performing The Small Faces 1968 No.1 album "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake" in 2018 to celebrate it's 50th anniversary!

Ogden's Nut Gone Flake is a concept album telling a fairy tale of sorts about a character named "Happiness Stan" and his search to find the missing half of the moon. The LP sat at the top of the UK album chart for 6 weeks and includes the singles Afterglow and Lazy Sunday.

The story was narrated by Stanley Unwin and we are lucky enough to have our narration provided by Stanley's son John, who does the Unwin-ese gobble-de-gook perfectly!

The show/gig will also include all the hits: All or Nothing, Itchycoo Park, Sha La La La Lee, Hey Girl, Tin Soldier... and many more!

Some act are like fine wine they just get better as the years go by and The Acoustic Strawbs are one of those acts. This will be a magical evening and a huge pleasure to have the guys back at Wokingham Music Club albeit this time at The Whitty Theatre

The support act is the very talented Irene Rae http://www.irenerae.com/

Irene Rae mixes emotional lyrics and a powerful yet delicate vocal with entertaining and funny stories about life, love and places her travels have taken her.

‘’Connecting with the audience through her music and creating a living room feel to her performance is where Irene Rae’s personality shines…a real pleasure to have witnessed.’’  EST Mag

Rae’s earliest musical memories stem from being a child, sitting in the backseat of her parents Cortina and listening to endless mix tapes of a variety of amazing music from Motown to The Beatles, Karen Carpenter to Bon Jovi, Barbra Streisand to Adam and the Ants… music, and more importantly singing was a family experience, one of love and support. Song-writing and playing guitar came a lot later into her life than most of her peers – she began to teach herself guitar at the age of 22 years old, listening to CDs and recreating the sound she heard.

Irene Rae has a wide and loyal fanbase throughout the UK which has seen her support artists that include Midge Ure, Hazel O'Connor, John Power, The Levellers (acoustic), The Jigantics and Declan Bennett.  Her style and lyrics have been compared to Norah Jones, Natalie Merchant, Eddi Reader, Lisa Loeb and Bic Runga – whilst remaining uniquely her own.

Martin Turner ex Wishbone Ash

The Beauty of Chaos Tour 2017

Featuring full 45th anniversary performance of

Wishbone Ash’s classic ARGUS album….plus more

Wishbone Ash was formed by West Country musicians Martin Turner and Steve Upton, who arrived in London in 1969 to embark on their musical journey. Intent on creating a musical sound that was rich in texture and melody, Martin Turner envisaged the band’s innovative harmony-guitar hallmark and guitarists Ted Turner and Andy Powell were recruited via a now legendary Melody Maker advert. The partnership of the original line-up of Wishbone Ash forged a unique musical identity that would produce some of rock music's best loved works and influence numerous successful bands and result in millions of album sales and concert attendances. Wishbone Ash would become one of the most enduring and best loved British rock acts and its name synonymous with high quality guitar-driven melodic rock music.

Over four decades later, the enduring music of the classic marks of Wishbone Ash continues to delight audiences worldwide through both live performances and a rich legacy of recorded work that continues to be enjoyed by fans old and new. Classic album releases such as Argus, Pilgrimage, There’s the Rub, New England and Live Dates defined the Wishbone Ash sound and have touched the hearts of several generations of music fans. As lead vocalist and key creative force, founding original member Martin Turner was central to the critical and commercial success of Wishbone Ash’s most revered albums, with his passionate vocal delivery, songwriting ability, keen melodic sense and production values being key ingredients in the definitive Wishbone Ash sound. Martin Turner continues to perform the band’s best loved works with his current line-up, which features guitarists Danny Willson and Misha Nikolic, and drummer Tim Brown.

In recent years Martin Turner has delighted audiences worldwide with its performances of material from the classic periods of Wishbone Ash’s history, with concert appearances in the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Holland, Spain, Greece, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, the USA and Canada. Performances have been captured on a series of acclaimed live CD and DVD releases. Martin Turner looks back fondly on his touring activities since his return to the live stage: “I have had a wonderful time over the past few years re-discovering the wider Wishbone Ash catalogue and taking this to the people. When I go to see an artist live, I want to hear the songs as I remember them from the records and I believe that is true of the Wishbone Ash audience too.”

Martin Turner’s The Beauty of Chaos tour will feature classic album tracks and stage favourites from the extensive Wishbone Ash repertoire, as well as new music that remains true to the original Wishbone Ash blueprint. In addition, the show will feature a rare performance of Wishbone Ash’s seminal 1972 Argus album performed in its entirety. Argus achieved a #2 UK album chart position and won UK music press “Album of The Year” awards. It remains one of the most enduring works of the classic rock era.

With just two old guitars, an upright bass and a bucket full of rich, aching harmony, the band preach foot-stomping country blues like you've never heard before.

There's a hint of Hank, a twist of Waylon and a little sprinkling of Gram in there too… it"s up and down, soft and loud and it swings that big ol' country snake

Pete Lincoln Lead Singer of Sweet in concert at Emmbrook Sports & Social Club

Pete spent the 80s and the 90s touring and recording with a wide range of artists including Sir Cliff Richard, Tina Turner, Shakin' Stevens and Dannii Minogue, travelling to all corners of the globe from New Zealand to Greenland.

From 1996 to 2005, Pete enjoyed his time as front man for the 70s band Sailor – most famous for their hits “Glass Of Champagne” & “Girls, Girls, Girls”.

In 2005 Pete joined Glam Rockers The Sweet, and is still touring extensively with the band as lead vocalist and bass player. Much of the band’s live work is in Europe, particularly in Germany where they still enjoy massive popularity, however they also enjoy success further afield, with regular visits to Australia.

Pete has written songs and instrumental music throughout his career, with some degree of success, having composed for various TV shows and commercials. Credits include Gerry Anderson’s 80s Terrahawks series and Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson’s BBC Chat Show, Clarkson. He also wrote all of the music for Clarkson’s solo commercial projects throughout the 90s. Pete also co-wrote a ballad for British 90s popsters S Club 7 . . .

In 2013, Pete released a long overdue solo CD entitled 'Soul Searching' and his second solo CD 'Heartbeat' was released in May 2016.

This collection of self-penned songs is very well received, both by Pete’s solo fans and Sweet fans alike.

Wokingham Film Society Present 20 feet from Stardom at Emmbrook Sports & Social Club

A first at Wokingham Music Club.

A film and not just any old film but probably the best music film made in the last 10 years, the multi award winning 20 feet from Stardom

Investigating the unbridgeable gulf between the back and front of the stage, Morgan Neville concludes that talent and stardom may not be intertwined, as each of his interviewees wrestles group dynamics and personal ambition.

A sharply cut early montage neatly establishes gospel singing as the bedrock of the blues and beyond, with conversation often slipping spontaneously into song.

Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Bette Midler et al offer insight into the music business while Sting witters about "spirituality", but it's the likes of Darlene Love who are the real stars here. The result is joyous and uplifting.

Doors open at 7pm and film time is 7.30pm

Ultimate Elton and The Rocket Band at Emmbrook Sports & Social Club

SOLD OUT but I am sure we will have a few returns so do drop me an email to go on the returns list

Some tribute artists look like their idol, some sound like their idol. Paul Bacon as Sir Elton John does both! Close your eyes and you won’t believe your ears, open your eyes and you won’t believe them either! You simply won’t find a closer tribute to Sir Elton John. As the foremost Elton John tribute act in the UK, ‘Ultimate Elton and The Rocket Band’ presents an uncannily accurate reproduction of the classic live shows of one of pop music’s most successful and best-loved artists - performances that also often feature some of Elton’s actual costumes, bought from his ‘Out the Closet’ sales! This is a show not to be missed but don't take my word for. This is what Elton's mum said about Ultimate Elton and The Rocket Band.

“Hi Paul  Just wanted to say a big Thank You for the gig on Saturday at my party. You were sensational and everyone was just amazed and enjoyed it all so much. Do say a big Thank You to the lads for me for doing such a good job. They really are great musicians and you all deserve a lot of praise and good fortune…Everyone loved you all and are still raving about it all.

The Style Councillors

The Style Councillors are the ultimate tribute to The Style Council.

With Swirling Hammond Organ and a classic horn section, The Style Councillors are as close as it gets to actually being there.

They will take you right back to the beginning for a trip through one of Paul Weller's arguably best periods as a songwriter.

Formed in Brentwood, Essex in late 2013 by long time PW fans Darren and Steve after a random social media post asked ‘why are there no Style Council tribute acts around?’

The band quickly recruited Rob and Craig on Bass guitar and Drums respectively they set about putting the show together before bringing in Helen on vocals and Keith on Keyboards.

Once the set was finalised the band line-up was completed by the addition of ex Bad Manners brass section Trevor, Tony & Dave
In a relatively short space of time a sizable and loyal following formed with the band playing to full houses up and down the country – notably including London’s 100 club and The Jazz Café.

The word spread to the extent that notable faces seen at recent shows have included Nicky Weller, Steve Parish, Gary Crowley, ex Style Council members Steve Sidelnyk, Anthony Harty & Tracie Young, Iain Munn – Author of TSC’s Biography ‘Mr Cools Dream’ & Chris Watson of the Moons, all of whom are massive Style Council fans.

The Faces Experience

Sorry but we are Sold Out

Picking themselves up and dusting themselves down after losing their lead singer Steve Marriott, the three Small Faces left behind – Kenney Jones, Ian MacLagan and Ronnie Lane – recruited Ronnie Wood on guitar, and then a certain Roderick David Stewart on lead vocals and became...The Faces.

Rod’s husky vocals and sublime songwriting talent, matched by that of Ronnie Lane, coupled with the raunchy playing of the band, produced an awesome repetiore of incredible songs and created one of the finest and most entertaining live acts of the early 70s. Not content with producing such terrific tracks as Three Button Hand Me Down, Cindy Incidentally, Stay With Me, Debris and Miss Judy’s Farm, The Faces also backed Rod live on numbers he put out as a solo artist, including massive monsters like Maggie May, You Wear It Well and many more.

This energetic and lively tribute to The Faces, featuring Noel Lanigan in the role of Rod Stewart, plus Dan Taylor, Neil Runalls, Dean Rees and Matt Bond from sensational Small Faces tribute The Small Fakers will have you Twistin’ The Night Away to 90 minutes of the finest tracks from Rod and The Faces, including all the above – Ooh La La!

Funke and the Two Tone Baby Support act TBC

Funke and the Two Tone Baby is a one man sonic explosion. Uncategorized and uncharted. Jammed halfway between frenzied alt-blues and metronomic dance beats. Combining guitar and harmonica with beatboxing and effects that seamlessly collide the organic with the mechanical to create a fresh sound of unstoppable rhythm and unrelenting melody.

Beyond the double microphones and trademark trilby is Dan Turnbull, a multi-instrumental battery spinning musical plates. A powerhouse to the ears and a blur to the eyes who smashes stage, festival and string after string whilst sweeping up audiences and dropping jaws from Boomtown Fair to Kendal Calling and Secret Garden Party to Convoi de Fete (NL).

Double Header Steve Summers Band and Mark Harrison

Two great blues acts will grace our stage tonight. Both acts are at the top of their game. First up is Mark Harrison. Check out his website http://www.markharrisonrootsmusic.com/ It is packed full of music and video clips. Radio 2’s Paul Jones is a big fan and you will be as well.

To finish the evening we have The Steve Summers Band www.thestevesummersband.co.uk

Steve is a great guitar player but even the best guys need to be kept in check and his back line of Bob Pearce on drums and Trevor Brooks on bass do that in real style. Is there a better blues 3 piece in the country? I think not but come along and decide for yourself

Hank Wangford. The Father fiqure of British Country Music

Tickets available at the door £12.50

If Daniel O'Donnell is the brightly scrubbed face of British country music then Hank Wangford is its guilty conscience, its dark and troubled grubby soul. Hank has picked at the miserable underbelly of country music for twenty eight years, inspiring others like Billy Bragg, The The,  The Alabama Three and other alt.country musicians.

Hank is at the top of his game and it will be an honour to have him play at our club
