THIS GIG IS SOLD OUT

By Arrangement with Selective Agency

Renowned for an endless string of soulful yet socially aware hits ...Forgotten Town, Ideal World, Born Again, Harvest for the World, Whats in a Word, Hooverville, Words, Father, The Bottle and many more The Christians enjoyed huge acclaim in the late 80s and early 90s both in the UK and Europe and often confused people with their band name (in fact just the brothers surname with absolutely no religious connotation!)

Still headed by enigmatic lead singer Garry Christian (who very much deserves the Daily Mirror’s description of him as having ‘one of the finest voices in pop) who has only gained in vocal stature (and wit) over the years!  the band are enjoying a revival currently touring successfully in the UK and Europe.
They will be playing for us their well known back catalogue and one or two favourites selected from newer albums.

See them at The Whitty Theatre on Friday 6th September and find out why Chris Evans said 'it was the best gig I've ever been to'

Simply Dan in Concert at The Whitty Theatre

Simply Dan was created by like-minded musicians who wanted to authentically present the kaleidoscopic sounds of Steely Dan. The 11 piece band focus on producing the complex harmonies and intricate rhythms of Donald Fagen and his band. Founded by Mark Roadnight (lead singer, guitar), Russ Parker (guitar), Roger Evans (keys), Mark Claydon (drums) and David McLeod (bass), the players are all experienced world class musicians who have toured, gigged and written songs all over the world with artist such as CARLEEN ANDERSON, JOE QUARTERMAN, MARTI PELLOW and the SOUL JAZZ COLLECTIVE.
Together, they have a penchant for playing Steely Dan covers, challenging themselves by staying faithful to the original recordings whilst also firmly putting their own stamp on the material.

Simply Dan use a 4 piece horn section to add to the already rich harmonies and sound. Along with two soulful backing vocalists, this Steely Dan tribute band aim to do justice to one of the world’s most interesting and challenging groups ever recorded. Selecting from the entire back catalogue of songs from the early days with Walter Becker through to later influences of Larry Carlton and Steve Gadd,

Simply Dan aim to thrill you with an accurate and authentic rendition of their classics!

Tir na nog in concert

Tir na nOg have been described as Alt Folk, Prog Folk, Psych Folk, and even Space Folk! But the duo, formed by Leo O’Kelly & Sonny Condell in 1970, transcends all these categories. What is not in doubt is that they are two of the most original and influential songwriters and performers Ireland has ever produced. Their guitars wind and mesh gorgeously together, their voices likewise; nor can they be separated for the quality of their songwriting. Songs like Condell’s ‘Our Love Will Not Decay’, ‘Eyelids Into Snow’ and ‘Two White Horses’, and O’Kelly’s ‘Piccadilly’, ‘So Freely’ and ‘Looking Up’ are as good as anything Ireland’s produced in the past four decades.

2015 saw the eagerly awaited release of a new studio album, 'The Dark Dance' - their first since 1973! Classic Rock magazine listed this as their 3rd best prog album of 2015! It has received glowing reviews across the music press.

'....oozes with prog-folk magic’ (R2 Magazine)

‘The Dark Dance is an acoustically mounted piece of great refinement, on a record often embellished by strings and moments of eastern promise'’ (Prog Magazine)

‘Each of these deceptively serene songs has an underlying mysticism, an arcane quality that cannot be denied' (Classic Rock Magazine)

Kast off Kinks at The Whitty Theatre

  • Wokingham Music Club at The Whitty Theatre (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The iconic British rock band, The Kinks, are often cited as one of the most important and influential rock bands of all time.

Their first hit, You Really Got Me, in 1964, broke new ground with driving power chords and Dave Davies’ distorted guitar sounds, and created a template for many bands to follow in a rock and roll development which led variously to heavy metal, new wave and grunge.

Later work saw the band’s style change to more melodic songs, highlighting Ray Davies’ lyrical and observational skills in songs like Sunny Afternoon, Dead End Street and Waterloo Sunset.

Although the band’s popularity in the UK waned in the 1970s, they found new commercial success, particularly in the USA, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and returned to the UK top 20 in 1983 with Come Dancing. The Kinks continued as a recording and gigging band until 1996, when the Davies brothers went their separate ways with solo careers.

During the band’s 32-year career, there were some changes in personnel, Pete Quaife, the original bassist, was replaced by John Dalton in 1969, and keyboard player John Gosling was added in 1970. Following the two Johns’ departure in the late 1970s, Jim Rodford became the Kinks’ bassist (after a short tenure by Andy Pyle) and Ian Gibbons took over on keyboards. Original drummer Mick Avory left the band in 1983, to be replaced by Bob Henrit. Mark Haley played keyboards for a period in the late 80s/early 90s.

The Kast Off Kinks formed in 1994 to keep the music playing on, and it is what the name implies - the original line-up consisted of the band that played Lola (apart from Ray and Dave) - Avory, Dalton and Gosling - together In 2009, the line-up became the band that played Come Dancing - Avory, Gibbons and Rodford (respectively the Kinks’ longest-serving drummer, keyboard player and bassist) - still with Dave Clarke covering for the Davies brothers. Jim then became very busy playing with The Zombies and Argent, so John Dalton was persuaded out of retirement and now plays very regularly with The Kast Off Kinks .

Almost every other ex-Kink has guested with The Kast Off Kinks, including Ray Davies.

Most definitely a night not to be missed

Following his Sell Out shows in January 2017 and December 2018 Elton is back.

Some tribute artists look like their idol, some sound like their idol. Paul Bacon as Sir Elton John does both! Close your eyes and you won’t believe your ears, open your eyes and you won’t believe them either! You simply won’t find a closer tribute to Sir Elton John. As the foremost Elton John tribute act in the UK, ‘Ultimate Elton and The Rocket Band’ presents an uncannily accurate reproduction of the classic live shows of one of pop music’s most successful and best-loved artists - performances that also often feature some of Elton’s actual costumes, bought from his ‘Out the Closet’ sales! This is a show not to be missed but don't take my word for.

This is what Elton's mum said about Ultimate Elton and The Rocket Band.

“Hi Paul  Just wanted to say a big Thank You for the gig on Saturday at my party. You were sensational and everyone was just amazed and enjoyed it all so much. Do say a big Thank You to the lads for me for doing such a good job. They really are great musicians and you all deserve a lot of praise and good fortune…Everyone loved you all and are still raving about it all.”

John Coghlan joined Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster in their newly-formed band ‘The Spectres’ in 1962. The group went through a series of name changes, including Traffic Jam, before becoming Status Quo in the late 60s when Rick Parfitt also joined the line-up.

In the years that followed, a string of chart-topping albums and an almost endless stream of hits included Pictures of Matchstick Men; In My Chair; Paper Plane; Caroline; Down Down; Rain; Wild Side Of Life; Rockin' All over the World, and many more. For Quo fans and critics alike, this time is often regarded as Quo’s “Classic” period.

Since leaving Quo John has worked with many noted and diverse musicians, in his own Diesel Band; with Partners In Crime; and the ‘Rockers’ featuring Phil Lynott, Roy Wood and Chas Hodges. Other collaborations have included Noel Redding (ex-Jimi Hendrix) and Eric Bell (ex-Thin Lizzy).

In 2013 and 2014, John rejoined Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt and Alan Lancaster for the two sell-out Status Quo Frantic Four Reunion Tours, selling out all over the UK and Europe and reigniting the excitement of the early days of Quo but tonight he will be with us in Wokingham

Eric Bell in concert at ESSC

Eric Bell in concert at ESSC

Wokingham Music Club is very pleased to announce a very special evening of Live Music

The 50th Anniversary Tour of Mr Eric Bell is coming to Wokingham Music Club.

The evening will look back over Eric’s years as lead guitarist with Thin Lizzy, touring the world and playing with Noel Redding and Bo Diddly to name but 2 world famous musicians and leading his own band but how did it all start you ask, well…..

In 1969 Eric Bell walked into a bar in Dublin, ordered a pint and settled down to watch a band play. Two of the members of that band were Brian Downey and Phil Lynott. He was knocked out by what he saw and heard and asked them to form a band with him. Both duly obliged and within weeks Thin Lizzy was born.

The three of them worked very hard both in the studio and on the road and were eventually rewarded with a hit single, the anthemic  - Whiskey In The Jar -  which catapulted them into world wide recognition.  Their new found popularity kept them very busy. There was a lot of pressure, both touring and recording and eventually Eric conceded that, health wise it was a bit too much for him to handle and left the band.

Noel Redding, bass player to Jimi Hendrix, befriended Eric and they were soon recording and touring together through Europe and America.

In the late seventies Bo Diddley came to the UK to tour and asked Eric, who else, to play guitar with him.

Eric eventually decided to forge a solo career, playing in his favourite 3 piece format and has over the years recorded a host of albums both live and studio and most recently has recorded two highly acclaimed albums, Exile and Standing At A Bus Stop. Both albums contain songs that have been laying dormant for a number of years and have now been given a well deserved airing.

2019 is the 50th anniversary of Thin Lizzy and Eric will celebrate this landmark the way he likes best, playing live in as many towns and cities as possible.

He brings with him two musicians who are also no slouches when it comes to recording and touring: Dave Wintour on bass and Romek Parol on drums, who, between them, have a client list that looks like a who's who of the rock'n'roll world.

Eric will work his way through a playlist of songs that takes him from early days and influences, through his "Lizzy" days, through his back catalogue and right up to the present day.

This evening will be full of surprises as no two nights are ever the same ....

Flutatious in Concert

Flutatious are a feisty, celtic, psy-folk, prog band blending soaring melodic flute, flying fiddle, spacey guitars and groovy beats! They have built up an incredible reputation with their live performances and self produced albums and are constantly in demand at festivals around the country.

Flutatious came to the attention of the Magick Eye Records label when company founder, Chris Hillman, saw them playing a great set at one of their festival appearances. Magick Eye then released the four track Flutatious EP, Fluctuations, to great acclaim.

Flutatious feature the solid backbone of drummer Malcolm Bailey and bassist Bill Forwell, augmented by guitar whizz Andy Faulkner with the unusual but mesmorising combination of flautist Michelle Devonshire and violinist Stella Ferguson out front.

Due to the positive reactions to the EP release, Magick Eye arranged for Flutatious to record a brand new album with the help of renowned producer John Mitchell.  John is a member of bands such as It Bites, Arena, Lonely Robot & Frost* and has produced artists such as You Me At Six & Enter Shikari. The recording sessions went very well and produced the album Festival featuring 10 tracks highlighting Flutatious at their best.

Although the band have previously self-released three albums, this is the first to receive wide distribution and the first to be available on download and streaming sites and the input of John Mitchell gave the new album a fresh powerful feel.

Many tribute bands claim to have one particular element of their act "just right" - the look, the sound, the equipment, the musicianship... Yet rarely do you find a band where each one of these individual components has been painstakingly addressed in just as much detail as the last. The Police Academy, however, do exactly that. Recreating and reproducing a totally authentic experience that allows audiences to enjoy and immerse themselves in some of the best known songs ever written by truly, one of the World's greatest ever bands. Roxanne, Message In A Bottle, Every Breath You Take, King Of Pain, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic and Walking On The Moon are just few of the highlights in a set that could legitimately be described as "all killer, no filler". The high-energy and engaging nature of the band's performances ensures that they willingly command your full attention from the very first note to the last, totally immersing you in the music and ensuring you have just as much fun as they do along the way.

Ultimate Elton and The Rocket Band at ESSC

Ultimate Elton and The Rocket Band

This Gig is SOLD OUT.

To be put on the returns list please email your requirements.

Following his Sell Out show in January 2017 Elton is back in our club again. If you missed him then do not miss him this time

They really are great musicians and you all deserve a lot of praise and good fortune…Everyone loved you all and are still raving about it all.

Dave Kelly Band at Emmbrook Sports & Social Club

Although Dave Kelly is best known as a bluesman, He still love many other forms of music and the Dave Kelly Band gives him an opportunity to play some rock n roll, some country rock, soul and mainly more of my own compositions.

Dave is in The Blues Band so instantly who have an idea of the mans pedigree. He was there at the beginning of The Blues Band and he is still there today 39 years later, but it is not just British Blues stars that Dave has played with.

From the USA we have Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker to name but 3

The inspiration into Dave’s musical career was his big sister, the late great Jo-Ann Kelly. She opened his mind to the Blues. Until that day he was only interested in Buddy Holly and the other USA Rock ‘n’ Rollers

Today, after years 'treading the boards' with The Blues Band, with his solo albums, duo tours with Paul Jones, and soundtrack work (for commercials and such projects as BBC TV's 'King of the Ghetto' and the Comic Strip's 'Strike!') Dave Kelly is firmly established as one of Europe's premier performer’s.

Geno Washington and the Yo Yo's

This gig is SOLD OUT

A return’s list is in place. Please email the club to go on the list

Geno originates from Evansville in Indiana, USA and first came to England in the 1960's as part of the US Air Force. His love of Blues and Soul music soon found him jamming with local bands in and around Ipswich and eventually led him to London where he caused a sensation singing with top R&B acts Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames and Zoot Money's Big Roll Band at the legendary Flamingo Club in Soho.  The rest, as they say, is history.

Geno teamed up with some of London's hottest musicians and he very quickly became established as the most exciting live band in Britain, regularly topping the bill over World famous artistes, as nobody in their right mind wanted to go on stage after a Geno show!

His live shows were immortalised in two of the biggest selling albums of the 60’s - "Hand Clappin' Foot Stompin' Funky Butt Live" and "Hipsters Flipsters and Finger Poppin' Daddies". His status as the undisputed "King of Soul" was cemented forever by Kevin Rowland and Dexy's Midnight Runners in the 1980’s with the World-wide No.1 smash hit single "Geno", which paid homage to the great man himself and is still played regularly today on national radio

Throughout the years Geno and his band have continued to tour extensively all over the World and have released several highly acclaimed albums and singles. His latest live double album simply entitled "It's Geno Time", recorded at the legendary Half Moon in Putney, is widely regarded as his best work to date: you only have to listen to the audience reaction to know that Geno has lost none of his magic as he and the band deliver a blistering set of Soul classics to a wild crowd who wouldn't let them off stage!

Geno's life long love of Blues and R&B has led to yet another chapter in his illustrious career with the formation of "Geno and the Yo Yo's” which features the long standing rhythm section of the Ram Jam Band (Geoff Hemsley on drums, Steve Bingham on bass and Stuart Dixon on guitar) which is a hard- hitting, fast-moving show of R&B / Blues / Soul classics that has audiences on their feet from start to finish and is receiving rave reviews wherever they play.

This will be a barnstorming live show that never lets up in intensity or excitement and delivers the goods every time!

Support act for this great show is a wonderful singer from Wales Mr John Adams. I fist saw him at The Half Moon in Putney. He has a wonderful voice and the stage presence of someone twice his age. John is worth the ticket price alone.   http://www.johnadamsmusic.co.uk/

Chris Difford in Concert

Wokingham Music Club, in collaboration with Artree Music are delighted to announce a show featuring legendary Squeeze co-founder and songwriter Chris Difford at The Whitty Theatre, Wokingham on Friday 14th September 2018.

For over 40 years, Chris has been at the forefront of British popular music, whether as bass player, vocalist and lyricist with the iconic new wave band Squeeze, as a songwriter for other artists including Brian Ferry and Lisa Stansfield, a solo artist with three critically acclaimed albums to his name or heading up songwriting schools – he’s rightly been called a master of his art.

Squeeze rose to fame in the late 1970’s and over the course of their career – which is still going strong - have racked up numerous top 20 hits including Cool for Cats, Up The Junction, Tempted and Pulling Mussels From A Shell. Difford and songwriting partner Glenn Tilbrook were award the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music in 2008 –  with the likes of Lily Allen, Mark Ronson, Kasabian, Razorlight and The Feeling all recognising the debt they owe to Squeeze’s music and to Difford’s way with words.

For his show in Wokingham, Chris will be performing many of the songs that made his name, as well as solo numbers. The audience will also hear stories from his time in music, which has inspired his recent acclaimed autobiography.

Joining Chris for this show will be the highly rated soulful folk trio Arcelia. Having performed for Artree a couple of times before, Arcelia are rightly forging a growing reputation on the roots music scene in the UK, which will no doubt continue with the release of their new album 'Building on the Land'. Comprising three musicians, all of whom have professional backgrounds in theatre, music and the arts – their close harmonies and outstanding songwriting have won them much praise.

Arcelia will be performing the main support spot of the evening, before joining Chris on stage to perform some of his songs with him.

A Charity Evening for Headway - The Brain Injury Association

When it came to organising this Charity evening I reflected on all the great acts that have played for us at Wokingham Music Club and I thought for our 1st Charity Gig that we should have the band that started it all for us in April 2012. Never The Bride.

They are not only lovely people to work with, but they are in my opinion the best band touring today but don’t take my word for it. Here are a few quotes from people who rate Never The Bride as highly as I do

“Nikki Lamborn has the best female rock voice since Janis Joplin." • ROGER DALTREY -

"These women exude their souls in their music and lyrics" • BLUES IN BRITAIN •

"One of the best live bands in Britain." • BOB HARRIS, BBC Radio 2 •

Shirley Bassey is such a huge fan of Never The Bride that she introduced them to her audience at a show she did in 2007. That was no ordinary show. That was the main stage at Glastonbury Festival and the audience was 200,000 strong. Tonight, you will have an opportunity to experience this hugely talented act in the intimate atmosphere of the Whitty Theatre

Rod Clements in Concert at ESSC in association with Artree Music

Rod Clements in Concert at ESSC in association with Artree Music

Rod Clements

I have to pinch myself every time I think about Rod Clements playing at our club because back in the early 70’s my brother and I used to go and see Lindisfarne whenever they played in London. I thought then and still do now that they were one of the top acts I have ever seen.

In the mid/late 60’s Lindisfarne began life as 'The Downtown Faction', and was led by Rod, but they soon changed their name to Brethren. Then in 1970, they were joined by Alan Hull and another name change this time to Lindisfarne. This was to be the turning point in Rod’s career. After years of hard graft on the road their first album Nicely out of Tune was released. The 2 singles from that album did not chart immediately but they like the album did after the release of their second album Fog on the Tyne.

Record sales were never as good as their live performances and these performances took their toll on the band and they spilt up only to reformed many times.

Rod has played with acts such as The Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Santana. He wrote "Meet Me on the Corner", a UK Top 5 hit in March 1972, which went on to win him an Ivor Novello Award.

Rod is a wonderful performer with stories a plenty. This will be a very special night in the history of our club. Tonight he will be joined on stage by Ian Thomson Coal Porters, Thea Gilmore)

Tonight's support act Hickory Signals who are a duo from Brighton. They are multi-instrumentalists, Laura Ward and Adam Ronchetti accompany strong vocal melodies with guitar, shruti, flute, glockenspiel and a variety of percussion, layering sounds carefully and minimally to atmospheric effect. More information can be found on their website https://hickorysignals.com/
